While preparing a glossary for new illustrators, I ran into a disagreement about how to explain the basic face outline categories. One draft lists category names without explaining the observations behind them, while another gives so much detail that the distinctions disappear. A reference about determining face shape might help us decide which observations belong in each entry. My preference is a consistent sequence for each entry, beginning with overall proportions and then describing the lower face contour. Readers could then compare the entries using the same features instead of treating one striking detail as a complete definition. There should probably be a note about intermediate outlines so readers understand why some examples do not match one description exactly. A set of similarly scaled outline drawings seems useful, especially if hair does not hide the edges that each definition describes. I do not want the glossary to rank shapes or suggest that an illustrator should change the features of a real subject. How would you keep these entries concise while still giving beginners enough information to compare the outline categories on their own? |
